Protecting Switch and PitStop Server licences in a virtual machine

After restarting a VM, Enfocus licences can break. Prevent this by fixing the MAC address and VM identifier and deactivating licences beforehand.

Symptom

After a restart or reboot of a virtual machine (VM), Enfocus licences can break so they are no longer usable.

Cause and solution

Enfocus licences check system characteristics like a fingerprint. If too much changes at once, the licence becomes invalid. On virtual machines this happens on rebuild or when values change on restart. Precautions:

  1. Deactivate existing licences before you virtualise an operating system or modify a VM;

  2. Make sure the Ethernet MAC address does not change on restart (set a fixed address);

  3. Make sure the unique VM identifier stays unchanged (see your VM documentation for fixed settings).

Example: simultaneous changes (memory, updates, network card) significantly increase the risk of a broken licence.
